Human technology

What is human technology?

HUTE stands for HUman TEchnology. Here is what we mean by the phrase, and what we do not.

Human technology is technology designed around people: how humans think, feel, communicate, relate to each other and make decisions. It starts from the person and builds the machine to fit, instead of asking the person to adapt to the machine.

The name HUTE is a contraction of HUman TEchnology. This page explains the idea behind the name, in plain language.

A short definition

Human technology is any system, tool or product whose design goal is to serve human understanding, relationships and wellbeing, and whose success is judged by what happens to the people who use it. Three questions separate it from technology that merely has humans as users:

  1. Does it understand people? It models what humans mean, not only what they type.
  2. Does it keep people in charge? Consent, privacy and the ability to say no are built in, not bolted on.
  3. Does it strengthen human connection? It helps people reach one another instead of replacing them.

Principles we work from

  • People first, systems second. Evaluation starts with human outcomes: was the person understood, helped, respected?
  • Human expertise is infrastructure. Skilled people, and what they know, are the most valuable input to capable AI. They should be treated and paid as such. See Intelligence Infrastructure.
  • Consent is the default. Private messages, contacts and recordings are never training data without separate, explicit consent. See Responsible AI.
  • Honest status. We describe what exists, what is in development and what is only planned.
  • Evidence over assertion. We publish how we evaluate claims in our methodology.

Human technology and artificial intelligence

Today's AI is strong at language and pattern recognition and weaker at the things people do without thinking: reading a room, noticing what was left unsaid, adjusting to a culture, knowing when to ask. Closing that gap is the subject of the HUTE AI Research Lab. Starting points:

Human technology and human connection

The same idea applies to products. HUMAN is the consumer product in development at HUTE: an AI-supported network designed to help people find, meet and stay connected with each other. It is described as product direction, not as a launched service. Related reading: the future of human connection in an AI-powered world.

Human technology and human expertise

Capable AI depends on what skilled people know and how they work. Our view of that economy is in Human expertise, training data and the economics of AI development and the research report on human expertise as infrastructure for AI.

Frequently asked questions

What does HUTE stand for? HUTE stands for HUman TEchnology. It is the name of the company behind this site.

Is "human technology" the same as human-centered design? They overlap. Human-centered design is a method for designing around users. Human technology, as we use it, is broader: it also covers how AI systems are trained, evaluated and governed so that they serve people.

Is human technology a product? No, it is a design philosophy. HUTE's research and its product, HUMAN, are applications of it.

Who is behind HUTE? HUTE was founded by Bhava and Vinuthna Ravilala.
